The first procedure to deal with the first stage of gum disease is scaling and root planing (also known as SRP), which stabilizes the health of the mouth by deep cleaning beneath the gumline, then evening the tooth enamel to limit future deposits. After one or several scaling and root planing procedures at DentalWorks - Garfield in Garfield Heights, OH by our dentists, the gums and teeth are often cured and the patient'ss concerns will begin to clear up.

"Let me start out by saying I dreaded the thought of going to the dentist so much that I didn't go for eight years! My gums finally got bad enough that I decided I needed to go. I was really worried about being judged and scolded for my poor dental health. You walk into this location and you're immediately greeted by the friendliest people! All of the nurses and dental assistants are absolute sweethearts and made me feel so comfortable and safe. I felt like they really listened to my problems and gave me solid advice on how to help. The dentist himself is also very kind and thoughtful. My former dentist was a cash grabbing sadist who would claim I needed surgeries and procedures that weren't necessary- so I was really worried about telling this place about my cavities and other problems. The doctor here told me I didn't even have cavities yet (my former dentist told me I had so much bone loss I would need implants) and that he would just watch them. I have nothing but praise for this place! My teeth have never felt better and I'm not terrified of the dentist anymore!"- S.S. / Google / Jan 10, 2019

What to Expect
For the scaling and root planing procedure, our dentists will apply local anesthesia on the needed areas. Sedation may be added to the anesthesia to help the patient keep calm and comfortable during the procedure. To get to all sections of the gum pockets and scrap off the plaque and tartar deposits, our dentists will use a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic cleaning instrument. As soon as the gum pocket is thoroughly cleaned, our dentists will decrease the areas where plaque and tartar can become trapped by planing (smoothing) the surface of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will begin to heal and reattach correctly to the tooth root. A few patients may have more than one treatment to get their best results.
After the scaling and root planing treatment is finished, patients sometimes experience some inflammation and/or bleeding of the gums for several days. To keep the mouth clean at home after the scaling and root planing procedure, patients should ask about proper techniques for brushing and flossing their teeth so they can follow the best home care routine. Patients should also be sure to schedule dental exams every year at DentalWorks - Garfield or as advised by our dentists. Our dentists will often schedule a check up appointment several months after the procedure to assess the patient's condition.
Since scaling and root planing is usually a medically required treatment for gingivitis, standard dental insurance companies will cover part of all of the cost of the procedure. DentalWorks - Garfield will call the patient's insurance company to determine their precise coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Patients can also inquire about payment options and financing plans in their consultation with our dentists.
